Welcome To The Water

Welcome to the Water

The Chicago Yacht Club is very excited and privileged to provide the members and guests of our beautiful and storied Club with various opportunities to get out on the water and enjoy Lake Michigan. Cruisers, sailors, power boaters, racers and kayakers alike have many opportunities to make each boating season memorable with our incredible member offerings. We hope that you will make plans to enjoy both Monroe and Belmont Station this upcoming season and explore all of the wonderful options we have for you to get on the water; rent one of our paddle board or kayaks, learn how to sail, try your hand at racing, or enroll your children or grandchildren in our exceptional Summer School sailing program or sailing camp. Dine on one of our beautiful patios or take in the sights from one of our lovely dining rooms, participate in one of our Club Fleets or Committees, or volunteer to give back to the community and Chicagoland area children with our Foundation. There are many activities and events for members of all ages and we pride ourselves on offering programming that is designed to fit your needs and grow as your Club does

We teach students the different parts of a boat and sailing terminology, as well as offer the opportunity to try out the different crew positions on one of our easy to sail Sonars, so that you feel comfortable in any spot on the boat. Whether you are interested in just learning the basics or you want to try your hand at racing, our team of highly skilled staff and coaches will help you or your child achieve your goals this season!

  • CREW U
    • Crew U is a seven-week program that begins in May and ends in June out of our Monroe Station location. This class is led by members of the Chicago Yacht Club who offer their boats and wisdom to help you get the skills you need to crew on a boat. The course includes some classroom instruction, but the vast majority is taught on the water. The classes are held on Tuesday nights, and many students get additional practical experience racing on offshore boats during Wednesday night racing. If you are interested in being part of yacht racing on Lake Michigan, this is a great way to up your experience and build relationships that may yield a position all summer long on one of the boats. The goal of the Crew U course is to prepare students to crew on offshore racing boats.

For the past 13 years, Crew U has taught adults with limited or moderate sailing experience everything that they need to know to start crewing on most racing boats. The majority of the class takes place on-the-water and has a hands-on focus. Rigging, sail trim and teamwork are among the skills covered.

Students have additional opportunities to sail on Wednesday nights starting in June. Students should expect to be on the water.
