Race Committee

The Chicago Yacht Club Race Committee facilitates a fair, quality and competitive racing program. Race Committee volunteers are those who love being on the water and who are interested in learning more about race management.

This committee consists of more than 100 dedicated volunteers, both Chicago Yacht Club members and non-members. The Club is proud to have over 25 U.S. Sailing certified race officers in its ranks, and most other volunteers have participated in race management seminars and training programs.

The Chicago Yacht Club hosts more than 100 races during a season, including the Race to Mackinac, the Sailing World Chicago NOOD Regatta and the ChicagoYacht Club Verve Regattas. Other events include Racing Yacht Fleet racing, Wednesday night Beer Can racing, and the Frostbite Series in both the spring and fall. Our reputation as a high quality Race Committee brings us North American Championships for many one design fleets, National Junior Championships, and World Championships for a variety of fleets.

We are always looking for new and enthusiastic volunteers to join our Race Management program. If you are interested in getting involved, contact the Regatta Manager at regattamanager@chicagoyachtclub.org

  • Who is on the Race Committee?
    • Many volunteers are racers, former racers, friends and family of competitors, and anyone who enjoys the camaraderie of the yacht racing community. Racing experience is not necessarily required, but we are looking for committed and organized team players interested in racing and race management.

  • How can I contribute?
    • The Race Committee's work-on-the water involves setting up the race courses, starting races, and recording the finishing competitors. There are many positions available, from committee boat drivers, mark setters, timers, flag signalers, and recorders. There are also opportunities off the water, including score keeping and assisting with registration for large events. Training is provided for novices, as well as for experienced members wanting to further their skills, including Race Management Certification.

  • How often do I volunteer?
    • Race Committee members volunteer anywhere from 1-46+ days but most average 13 days on-the-water in a season. All volunteers are encouraged to participate regularly to develop skillful teams for our events. The committee also gathers onshore for monthly meetings and several social activities throughout the year, such as cocktail parties and dinners.

  • Where can I get more information to share with others interested in the Race Committee?

Volunteering for the Chicago Yacht Club Race Committee is an extremely rewarding experience.
