Podium Finishes for CYC Members at M32 Worlds CYC’s Don Wilson Wins Corinthian World Championship at M32 Worlds, Prendergast/Canfield 3rd

While most of the Chicago Yacht Club membership had its gaze firmly focused on the 109th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, longtime CYC member, businessman and sailing supporter, Don Wilson was busy at another top tier event in Marstrand, Sweden. Wilson, competing in the at the M32 Worlds, skippered his team to 4th overall and earned the title of Corinthian World Champion which is awarded to the top amateur helmsman competing at the event. Fifteen teams from seven nations were represented at the event sailed in the legendary venue off Marstrand. Also sailing for Chicago Yacht Club was Jimmy Prendergast, placing 3rd Corinthian with CYC member Taylor Canfield as tactician and Mark Spearman, John Wallace, Phillip Carlson as crew.

The M32 is a 32-foot high performance catamaran, designed in 2011. This modern design quickly earned its stripes as the boat of choice for the World Match Racing Tour, staged around the world. The M32 is sailed by a crew of 5 athletic sailors. Wilson’s crew included CYC members Keith Swinton, Chicago sailor, Josh McCaffery, and former Oracle Team USA members, Kinley Fowler, Ted Hackney.

“I have really enjoyed learning to sail the M32 these past two years and having 15 boats reaching across the line was spectacular. Lake Michigan is becoming a hub for the M32 and with the 2017 North Americans and the 2018 Worlds planned or Chicago, I hope more teams will come give it a try”, commentated Don Wilson.

Chicagoans may have seen the team practicing in their boat, Convexity, in the waters of Lake Michigan and competing in the 2016 Verve Offshore Race. In the next two years, Chicago will play host to both North American and World Championships for this growing class of boats.
