Race Weather Routing on the Great Lakes
with Chris Bedford

March 11 from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Monroe Station
Join world-renown race meteorologist Chris Bedford for a class focusing on weather and tools to perform pre- and in-race analysis for racing start to finish in the fastest time possible. Emphasis will be for the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac; however, the knowledge and skills learned may be applied to any distance race on the Great lakes. Starting with basic weather knowledge, attendees will:
-Review some of the basic weather patterns typically experienced on the Great lakes
-Study conceptual models of large scale wind systems as well as local lake/land breezes
-Participate in practical examples of race routing analysis
-Learn how to drill down using high resolution weather data and GRIB files
-Practice using tools to analyze routing options and developing a pre-race plan and adjusting the plan once the race is in progress

It is highly recommended that participants have navigation and routing software, such as Expedition, and bring their computers to the workshop. While the course will use Expedition Navigation software for demonstration purposes, much of the knowledge, tools, and techniques are applicable to other routing software packages. A 14-day free demo is available for Expedition; if you do not already own it, we suggest you install the demo a day or two before the seminar so you can use it at the seminar and practice with it after class is over.
Download Expedition HERE

You should also install NOAA RNC or ENC charts for the Great Lakes, as charts do not come pre-installed. This can be done from within Expedition using the "Charts"menu item. Expedition's help file is quite useful   (Note to Mac Users: Expedition runs perfectly well using Windows emulation software such as Parallels Desktop, VMWare Fusion, or Apple's BootCamp - for info on these emulation programs, visit HERE.

NOTE: Expedition requires Windows 7 or above and does NOT run on an iPad or similar devices.
