  • Sailing Education Grants
    • Sailing Education Grants

The CYC Foundation offers need-based and merit-based financial aid to youths seeking to learn to sail or to improve their sailing skills. Children from age 8 through 19 years of age are eligible for consideration for sailing education grants. Those seeking sailing education grants must be residents of the Chicagoland area. If the individual is from outside the area, the request must be for support to attend an event held in the Chicagoland area.

The program for which an applicant is seeking financial consideration must be located in the Chicago area and must be affiliated with a recognized yacht club, sailing association, foundation or official community organization. Private coaching or instruction is not covered by CYCF’s sailing education grants. Applications may be for one session of a given sailing season only (e.g. for only one summer sailing session). Merit must be some form of sailing accomplishment (e.g. placing in the top three at a regatta, receiving the sportsmanship award for sailing).

Applications for grants for sailing education are considered according to the following schedule:

       Program          Applications           Deadline
       Spring    January 1    March 15
       Summer     January 1    June 15
       Fall       May 1     September 15

Applicants can expect to be notified of the Foundation’s decision for all programs as soon as is practical following the vote of the Board of Trustees.
  • Regatta and Clinic Participation Grants
    • Regatta and Clinic Participation Grants

The opportunity for young sailors to compete in local, national and international sailing events is essential for developing sailing skills. Regatta competition and clinic participation teach life-long lessons, build character, foster teamwork, strengthen respect, and nurture sportsmanship. The CYC Foundation seeks to support serious competitors at all skill levels to create sailors who will enjoy and contribute to the sport of sailing throughout their lives. Both individuals and teams may be considered for grants.

Individuals must be residents of the Chicagoland area or if the individual is from outside the area, the request must be for support to attend an event held in the Chicagoland area. Youth sailors from age 8 through 22 years of age may apply. Applicants must demonstrate need or merit. If a team is applying, all members of the team must conform to these same age and residence requirements. Applications from individuals who do not conform to the above requirements may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Sailors interested in obtaining a grant must fill out a Grant Application, Sections A and B2. Fully completed applications must be received by the Chicago Yacht Club Foundation Grant Review Committee no later than the first of the month in which the regatta takes place. An exception may be necessary where qualifying events occur within a narrow time frame. If this is the case, it must be made clear in a letter or email sent with the application. Within two weeks following evaluation of the grant application, an applicant will receive notification of the Foundation’s decision.
