Crew U

Crew U is a seven week program that teaches students with little to no sailing experience the skills required to crew on an offshore racing sailboat. Crew U classes meet once a week for seven weeks at Monroe Station. Students have additional opportunities to sail on Wednesday evenings starting in June.

Students graduate with a basic knowledge of parts of the boat, sail trim and sail handling. The majority of the class takes place on the water with a hands-on focus. Rigging, sail trim, and teamwork are among the topics covered. Throughout the class, students are given the opportunity to experience a variety of boats and network with skippers. The program helps students find potential teams to join after the conclusion of the class.

The class culminates in a race where students fill all crew positions to successfully sail the boat on a windward/leeward race course. Throughout the years, Crew U has introduced hundreds of students to sailing. Many former students continue to actively race in Chicago.
