Racing Yacht Fleets

Chicago Yacht Club's Racing Yacht Fleets race out of Belmont Harbor every weekend during the season. The Racing Yacht Fleets include Etchells, Shields, Luders, and V15s. 

The Chicago Yacht Club's Racing Yacht Fleet is based out of the Club's Belmont Station. The term "racing yacht" means that the boats in a given class of competition have identical design of hull, sails, and rigging. In some classes, most or all of the boats are built from one or a limited number of molds. Typically, there are restrictions in the number or weight of crew on board to keep the total weight of boats as close as possible. As a consequence, all boats in a racing yacht class have equal speed potential, so that winning is left to the skill of the crew and skipper. For that reason Olympic yachting events are sailed in racing yacht classes.
