CYC Race Committee Christens "Kay Baxter"

Fri, Jul 23, 2010 10:04 AM

On Wednesday, July 21, 2010, about 60 members of the Chicago Yacht Club Race Committee gathered at Monroe Station to christen the new RC boat ‘Kay Baxter’ whose namesake was a distinguished member of Race Committee who passed away this past year. Kay Baxter volunteered her time and services to the Chicago Yacht Club for 60 years.

“The Chicago Yacht Club Race Committee has a long standing tradition on naming boats after valued members of the committee and people that have supported the sport of sailing,” explained Chicago Yacht Club Race Chair Janet Baxter, “and we are honored to have ‘Kay Baxter’ as part of our fleet.”

For those who knew Kay, the ‘Kay Baxter’ was christened in just her style, with scotch. Just because the Race Committee knew how much she would have hated them wasting good scotch, shots were sipped and then used to christen the boat.

The ‘Kay Baxter’ is a 19’ Trophy, which will be used by the Race Committee primarily as a mark set boat. ‘Kay Baxter’s’ first official use for the Chicago Yacht Club will be to guard the start of the 102nd Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, an event that Kay Baxter was truly devoted to. The Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac kicks off Saturday, July 24th.
