Chicago Yacht Club member wins US Youth Sailing Championships

CHICAGO—Chicago Yacht Club member Stephanie Hudson and her crew Rebecca King won the 2009 US Youth Sailing Championship trophy for the Club 420 class on Tuesday June 30, 2009.  Hudson and King won by three points and were awarded the Manton D. Scott Memorial Trophy, which Hudson hopes to display at the Chicago Yacht Club.

“It is very exciting to win.  We knew we’d be competitive, but we weren’t expecting to do as well as we did,” Hudson said.  “This was my last Youth Sailing regatta, so it’s cool to win the title and go out in style.”

“Stephanie has worked extremely hard at sailing, competing in all the major national club 420 events for the last three years, and cross training in the I420 and 470 internationally in the last year,” Chicago Yacht Club Sailing School Director Frank Ustach said. “It is great to see her hard work and dedication has paid off again with this big victory at Youth Champs.”

The U.S. Youth Sailing Championship was hosted by the Indian Harbor Yacht Club in Greenwich, Conn. Sponsored by LaserPerformance and Gill North America, the U.S. Youth Sailing Championship is the pinnacle of youth sailing competition in the United States. The country’s top single- and doublehanded young sailors, both girls and boys, ranging from 13 to 19 years of age raced for four prestigious trophies from Friday, June 26 through Tuesday, June 30. US SAILING selected this field of sailors from across the country, including the U.S. Virgin Islands, based on their sailing resumes and performance at regional, national, and international competitions.
